Cerne Abbas – Cerne Abbas, Dorset

Cottage Holidays

The ancient and beautiful Dorset town of Cerne Abbas is a magnet for tourists not least of all because it is home to perhaps the finest genuine mediaeval street in the south.

One of the great attractions is that if you feel so inclined you can abandon your car and still enjoy days of sightseeing and activities in the immediate area.

Some of the attractions are cycling along the many paths that criss-cross their way in and out of the town and other  pastimes such as horse riding. Of course the most famous occupant of the area is the “ rude man” or the Cerne Abbas giant, which dominates the town from its hillside vantage point.

There are many types of accommodation available with a limited number of small hotels and B&Bs as well as a reasonable supply of attractive olde worlde holiday rentals in the form of  holiday cottages offerings.

One of the companies offering this type of accommodation is Pet Holiday Finder, they list Wancombe Cottage as a pet friendly terraced cottage retreat in idyllic surroundings, offering three bedrooms with a bathroom and a separate shower room, as well as a log fire centred lounge, and a kitchen and dining area, which is fully equipped. Outside there is a pleasant courtyard with furnishings as well as a lawn.

Another company by the name of English Cottage is offering The Tanyard, this is a classic dispatched cottage within the village comprising of a very large drawing room with original oak flooring and a real inglenook fireplace, as well as ceiling beams and a great view from the bay window, which even has seats allowing you to while away the day looking out on the garden.

There is a second lounge which also has original beams, but also has modern equipment such as a PlayStation, DVD player and TV. The kitchen is spacious and can accommodate eight people around its table, there is an oil fired cooker as well as a modern microwave and dishwasher.
Entry is gained to the property via security conscious electric gates that lead to parking for several vehicles. The gardens are huge and lawned, with the river Cerne passing directly along its edge, offering stunning views of the countryside while enjoying a barbecue on the extensive patio area.

Another company called Dorset Cottage are listing a peaceful period accommodation by the name of Old Gaol Cottage. This is a beautiful stone building which dates back to 1859.

It has a colourful history having once been the local jail and police station right up until the mid-50s, on either side are the “sergeant’s quarters” and the “old court”.

The building also has the distinction of being awarded the very coveted and unusual five star rating from the English Tourism Board. It is capable of playing home for up to six people in its two bedrooms.

There is a comfortable living area with all modern facilities including a kitchen, as well as an extensive dining room, a fully equipped bathroom and a second half-bathroom. Outside there is a courtyard which also has a small garden.
